Studebaker Museum's 'Motor City, Indiana' Exhibit Sits Two Miles From a Stalled Samsung SDI Battery Plant
The Studebaker National Museum in South Bend opened "Motor City, Indiana," an exhibit running through January 31 that documents early auto manufacturers across South Bend, Mishawaka and Elkhart. A companion exhibit marks the 100th anniversary of the 840-acre Studebaker Proving Ground in New Carlisle, a site Navistar still operates as a fee-for-service test facility today.
That same New Carlisle corridor is live in a way the exhibit does not mention. Roughly two miles from the Proving Ground, Samsung SDI is building its $3.5 billion SynergyCells battery plant after buying out GM's 49.99 percent stake in August. Samsung SDI has since pivoted the plant's chemistry from EV cells toward LFP energy storage, and as of late October the promised 1,700 manufacturing jobs have no confirmed restart timeline. Any supplier that built an order book around the original NCA cathode plan should confirm whether that demand still exists.
