Amazon's $100M Greenwood Plant Brings Amazon Greenwood Manufacturing Jobs at Nearly $100,000
Amazon is investing more than $100 million in a 585,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing plant at 1175 Collins Road in Greenwood, purchasing and equipping an existing building rather than building new. The project will create 300 skilled manufacturing and engineering positions by the end of 2028, and Amazon Greenwood manufacturing jobs will pay an average of nearly $100,000 a year for roles including CNC operators, welders, powder coating technicians and controls engineers.
At roughly $333,000 in capital spent per job, this looks far more like a semiconductor or EV drivetrain build than a distribution center, and it follows two Massachusetts robotics plants and an August Texas announcement in Amazon's push to build its own robots in-house. The wage number is the part to watch locally. It lands on a 2027-2028 hiring timeline directly against Tier 1 and Tier 2 auto suppliers in Marion, Hendricks and Hamilton counties currently paying $23 to $26 an hour, a gap close to double that is likely to force wage increases or attrition at those plants within 12 to 18 months.
- Impact
- At roughly $333,000 in capex per job, the project's capital intensity resembles a semiconductor or EV drivetrain facility far more than a typical distribution center, and it's Amazon's next step after two Massachusetts robotics plants and an August 2026 Texas announcement in building out in-house robot manufacturing that bypasses third-party vendors like Symbotic. The $100,000 wage benchmark lands on a 2027-2028 hiring timeline that will directly compete with Tier 1 and Tier 2 auto suppliers in Marion, Hendricks and Hamilton counties currently paying $23-$26 an hour, a nearly 2x gap likely to force wage increases or attrition at those plants within 12 to 18 months.
- Watch
- Public disclosure of the IEDC incentive package tied to the project, and whether Amazon's product scope expands beyond drive units toward higher-complexity output given its 2026 Fauna Robotics humanoid acquisition.
- For the huddle
With a $100,000 wage floor arriving in Johnson County on a 2027-2028 timeline, how exposed is our skilled-trades retention plan to a pay gap nearly double what we're currently offering CNC, welding and controls staff?
The wage gap is close to double current Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier pay in the region, so a retention plan or counter-offer needs to be in place well before Amazon's 2028 launch, not after the first resignation.
