Samsung SDI Takes Full Ownership of the New Carlisle Indiana Battery Plant
Samsung SDI acquired General Motors' stake in the New Carlisle battery plant, making the $3.5 billion facility its first wholly owned battery-production operation in North America. The company has not published a revised completion date, job count, or production target, and St. Joseph County says it is still waiting on an updated project plan.
This follows a pattern. GM exited a nearly identical joint venture with LG Energy Solution near Lansing, Michigan last year, so Samsung SDI and LGES now each run a former GM-anchored Midwest plant on their own, with SK On chasing the same fast-growing energy storage market. Full ownership lets Samsung SDI retool the line toward storage-grade battery chemistry without a GM vote, and the company locked in more than $2.35 billion in U.S. storage supply contracts in December 2025 and March 2026, months before the ownership change closed. That order of events suggests the storage pivot was the condition for the buyout, not the result of it. The plant also sits near AWS's $13.8 billion Project Rainier data center campus in the same township, though no supply relationship between the two has been confirmed publicly.
- Impact
- This isn't an isolated GM retreat: GM exited a nearly identical LG Energy Solution joint venture near Lansing, Michigan in 2025, meaning both Samsung SDI and LGES now independently run former GM-anchored Midwest gigafactories, and a three-way sprint with SK On is underway to grab the fast-growing U.S. energy storage (ESS) market. Full ownership also lets Samsung SDI re-spec the line from the originally planned 27 GWh of EV-grade NCA cells toward ESS-grade LFP chemistry without a GM vote, and the timeline suggests the company locked in over $2.35 billion in U.S. ESS supply contracts in December 2025 and March 2026, months before the buyout, meaning the ESS pivot may have been the precondition for the deal, not the result of it. The plant also sits in Olive Township alongside AWS's $13.8 billion, 2.25-gigawatt Project Rainier data center campus, a natural ESS anchor customer county officials haven't publicly confirmed a supply relationship with.
- Watch
- Samsung SDI's publication of a revised completion window, job count, and incentive-milestone update for St. Joseph County, which construction crews have been waiting on since the pause in May 2026.
- For the huddle
If Samsung SDI's Olive Township plant pivots toward ESS batteries for data centers like AWS's neighboring Project Rainier campus, is there a supply or service opportunity for us in that corridor before the contracts get locked in elsewhere?
Samsung SDI has already signed over $2.35 billion in U.S. storage supply contracts and sits next to AWS's $13.8 billion Project Rainier campus, so the window to position as a local supplier or service provider is open now, before a confirmed customer relationship narrows it.
