Samsung SDI's New Carlisle Indiana Battery Plant Takeover, Amazon's Terre Haute Nuclear Bet, and GM's Brownstown Closure
Samsung SDI's New Carlisle Indiana battery plant, Amazon's Terre Haute nuclear bet, and GM's Brownstown closure: what Indiana manufacturers need to know.
Samsung SDI took full ownership of the $3.5 billion New Carlisle Indiana battery plant in St. Joseph County, Amazon agreed to fund a 960-megawatt nuclear plant on a retired coal site in Sullivan County, and General Motors confirmed it will close its Brownstown battery plant near Detroit, all within the same week. Together these three developments show where battery and power capital is actually moving in the Midwest, and Indiana is picking up more of it than Michigan.

Samsung SDI Takes Full Ownership of the New Carlisle Indiana Battery Plant
Samsung SDI acquired General Motors' stake in the New Carlisle battery plant, making the $3.5 billion facility its first wholly owned battery-production operation in North America. The company has not published a revised completion date, job count, or production target, and St.

- If Samsung SDI's Olive Township plant pivots toward ESS batteries for data centers like AWS's neighboring Project Rainier campus, is there a supply or service opportunity for us in that corridor before the contracts get locked in elsewhere?

Amazon Funds 12 Nuclear Reactors Near Terre Haute
Amazon announced Oct. 19 it will fund a 960-megawatt nuclear plant on the site of a demolished coal plant just south of Terre Haute in Sullivan County.

- If X-energy's first commercial reactor at Seadrift slips or stalls over the Texas lawsuit, how does that change our planning horizon for any power-supply assumptions tied to the Terre Haute project?

AEP and X-energy Formalize Breed Station Plan Amid a Competing CANDU Bid
AEP and X-energy signed a joint development agreement the same day to evaluate the 960-megawatt, 12-reactor project at Indiana Michigan Power's retired Breed Generating Station. AEP's chairman and CEO, Bill Fehrman, said the Amazon-backed structure covers the full project cost so existing ratepayers aren't exposed to construction risk.

- With Indiana running two separate nuclear site competitions at once (Xe-100 at Breed vs. CANDU reactors elsewhere), do we have a read on which technology and timeline is more likely to actually deliver power we can plan around?

GM Confirms Brownstown Battery Plant Closure Alongside $20 Billion Buyback
General Motors confirmed its Brownstown battery and drive-unit plant south of Detroit will close when its lease expires in summer 2027, the same day the company authorized another $20 billion in stock buybacks on top of a $6 billion program it finished in January. The plant opened in 2010 with $106 million in federal Recovery Act funding and once employed roughly 300 workers; fewer than a dozen remain, and GM is offering the rest other placements.
- For the huddle
- As GM walks away from battery-plant ownership in Michigan while Stellantis and Samsung SDI scale up their Kokomo JV, are we positioned to pick up any supplier or subcontractor work GM is leaving on the table?
