ITAMCO Pitches Indiana Innovation District for Plymouth

Plymouth-based gear and precision machining company Indiana Tool & Manufacturing Co., established in 1955, revealed on October 10 plans to ask the City of Plymouth to annex and rezone its Michigan Road facility, an initial move toward establishing what the company refers to as an Indiana Innovation District focused on advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, and tech commercialization. President Gary Neidig described it as a platform that could evolve over decades, but the company has not disclosed acreage, zoning details, investment figures, job targets, or a construction schedule. That puts ITAMCO behind South Bend's Colfax Corner, backed by Ancora and Notre Dame, which already has a $750 million projected 10-year impact, more than 400 committed jobs, a financing bond in place, and construction starting summer 2026. ITAMCO does have one card Colfax Corner lacks: its own SIMBA Chain spinout, born from a DARPA contract with Notre Dame, which gives Plymouth a defense and cybersecurity pitch distinct from Colfax Corner's university commercialization angle, if ITAMCO chooses to use it.

Impact
ITAMCO is entering a regional race it's currently losing on paper: South Bend's Colfax Corner, backed by Ancora and Notre Dame, already has a $750 million projected 10-year impact, 400+ committed jobs, an IDD bond, and construction starting summer 2026, while Plymouth has none of that quantified yet. The unreported lever here is ITAMCO's own SIMBA Chain spinout, born from a DARPA contract with Notre Dame, which gives Plymouth a legitimate defense-cybersecurity pitch to the IEDC that's distinct from Colfax Corner's university-commercialization angle, if ITAMCO chooses to use it.
Watch
Plymouth Common Council action on the annexation and rezoning petitions, and whether ITAMCO follows with a state Innovation Development District designation application under IC 36-7-32.5, which now requires annual financial reporting before designation.
For the huddle

If a nearby precision-gear peer company can leverage its own federal research spinout history to pitch a defense-industrial innovation hub, do we have underused IP, patents, or research relationships we could be positioning the same way?

NIA waited until equipment was installed and capacity gains were measurable before holding its ribbon cutting, while ITAMCO went public with a vision before acreage, investment, or job numbers existed, decide which approach matches what your lenders and employees expect from you.
