Fort Wayne's Northern Indiana Anodize Completes $4 Million Equipment Expansion
Northern Indiana Anodize held a ribbon cutting October 22 at its Bluffton Road plant in Allen County to mark roughly $4 million in new manufacturing, logistics, and IT equipment, not a building addition, expected to lift production capacity 40% to 50%. The company has grown from 17 employees in 2019 to more than 150 today and is adding 30 jobs in racking and packaging, quality, sales, maintenance, material handling, and waste treatment at $20 to $35 an hour. The company markets itself to architectural, energy, marine, and industrial customers, but says nothing about automotive or EV work, even though anodized aluminum's corrosion resistance and dielectric insulation are exactly what EV battery enclosure makers need. Pioneer Metal Finishing already moved into that lane with a dedicated EV supply partnership in 2025. NIA's equipment-only approach also caps how long a part can run through its tanks at 28 feet, well short of the 40 feet a competitor like Danco Anodizing can already handle.
- Impact
- NIA's equipment-only, asset-light approach is a deliberate scaling play, but it caps tank count while rivals like Danco Anodizing can already handle parts up to 40 feet versus NIA's 28-foot ceiling, a constraint that matters if architectural or marine customers need longer runs. The more interesting gap: NIA markets itself to architectural, energy, marine, and industrial customers but never mentions automotive or EV, even though anodizing's dielectric insulation and corrosion resistance are exactly what EV battery enclosure makers need, an opening Pioneer Metal Finishing already moved on with a dedicated EV supply partnership in 2025.
- Watch
- Whether EPA's metal finishing effluent guideline rulemaking targeting PFAS discharges, expected 2025-2026, raises compliance costs for NIA's newly expanded waste treatment operation.
- For the huddle
Could we position ourselves as a finishing or coatings supplier to Indiana's growing EV and battery footprint (GM, Stellantis, Samsung SDI) the way Pioneer Metal Finishing already has, rather than waiting for that demand to find us?
NIA waited until equipment was installed and capacity gains were measurable before holding its ribbon cutting, while ITAMCO went public with a vision before acreage, investment, or job numbers existed, decide which approach matches what your lenders and employees expect from you.
