Northern Indiana Anodize's $4 Million Fort Wayne Equipment Bet
Northern Indiana Anodize held an Oct. 22 ribbon cutting at its 13010 Bluffton Road plant in Allen County for a $4 million expansion that adds a crane line, automation, material handling and waste treatment equipment inside its existing 90,000 square foot footprint rather than new building space. Owner and CEO Andrew Smith expects the investment to lift capacity 40 to 50%, add roughly 30 to 35 jobs paying $20 to $35 an hour, and push total headcount above 150. NIA is chasing growing demand for PTFE and hard anodized finishes in solar and architectural work, and the waste treatment line in this capex round lands right as the EPA advances PFAS related revisions to its Metal Finishing Effluent Guidelines, with a final rule targeted for 2026. If your own finishing or coating lines run PTFE or fluoropolymer chemistries, NIA's decision to fund waste treatment now, ahead of a final rule, is worth studying as a hedge rather than just a throughput upgrade.
- Impact
- NIA is explicitly chasing solar and architectural anodizing demand, where PTFE and hard-anodized finishes are gaining share over mill-finish aluminum, but the waste-treatment line item in this capex round lands just as the EPA advances PFAS-related revisions to its Metal Finishing Effluent Guidelines (40 CFR Part 433), with a final rule targeted for 2026. That means NIA's fastest-growing finish line, PTFE anodizing, may carry compliance costs no coverage of the groundbreaking has flagged, and this waste-treatment investment could be as much a regulatory hedge as a throughput play.
- Watch
- EPA's 2026 final rule on PFAS discharge limits for metal finishing facilities, which would directly affect any Indiana shop running PTFE or fluoropolymer-based anodizing lines.
- For the huddle
If our finishing or coating lines use PTFE or fluoropolymer chemistries, have we modeled what an EPA PFAS discharge rule could cost us in 2026-27?
Check whether any of your finishing, coating or plating lines use PTFE or other fluoropolymer chemistries, and if they do, start pricing out waste treatment upgrades before the final rule sets a compliance deadline for you.
