Indiana RV Manufacturing Jobs in Bristol Come From a Bet Against a Shrinking Market
Boundless Recreation founder Nate Nickell built his career running Forest River RV in Elkhart and serving as vice president of sales at Crossroads RV in LaGrange County before putting $2 million into a 104,000 square foot plant at 705 Maple Street in Bristol. The company has already hired 45 workers toward a 2028 target of 115, backed by up to $1.4 million in state tax credits that only pay out once the jobs and investment are actually in place. Nickell knows his former employer's cost structure and dealer terms from the inside, and that matters because he's launching into a market where wholesale RV shipments are projected to fall roughly 8% in 2026, and where Patrick Industries and Lippert Industries are finalizing a $3.52 billion merger that would put the dominant supplier of slides, frames and electronics for every towable OEM in the region under one roof. Bristol-based Ember RV is developing its own fifth wheel at the same time, which means two boutique startups will be chasing the same dealers in a shrinking market with fewer independent component suppliers to source from.
- Impact
- Nickell is launching directly against his former employer Forest River, which holds roughly 39% of Q1 2026 towable retail registrations, giving him insider knowledge of its cost structure and dealer terms, but he's doing it as Patrick Industries and Lippert Industries finalize a $3.52 billion merger, reaffirmed the same day as Braun's announcement, that would consolidate the dominant suppliers of slides, frames and electronics for every towable OEM in the region. Bristol-based Ember RV is simultaneously developing its own fifth wheel, meaning two nearly identical boutique startups are about to fight for the same dealers in the same town just as wholesale RV shipments are projected to fall roughly 8% in 2026.
- Watch
- Whether Patrick Industries' board accepts or rejects Monomoy Capital Partners' competing bid, which will determine how much pricing leverage a merged supplier holds over boutique OEMs like Boundless.
- For the huddle
If component pricing power consolidates under a combined Patrick-Lippert supplier, do we have alternate sourcing relationships lined up the way Boundless will need?
Map every vendor relationship where fewer than three alternate suppliers exist for a critical component, and get pricing commitments in writing before a merger changes who you're negotiating with.
