Honda's Greensburg Manufacturing Day Visit Collides With an Unconfirmed Civic Phase-Out

On Oct. 5, freshmen in Eastern Hancock High School’s new EH Connect program visited Honda’s Indiana Auto Plant in Greensburg for a tour. They were among more than 1,500 students from over 50 schools across the country who joined in Honda’s Manufacturing Day effort. Students virtually welded parts and ran a Lego-based assembly line built around Honda's current Civic Hatchback and CR-V production.

One day before this story ran, CarScoops reported that Honda has reportedly scrapped plans to build the next-generation Civic at Greensburg in 2028, shifting that capacity to CR-V production instead, a claim Honda told CarScoops it does not confirm or deny because it "doesn't speculate on future production plans." If that reporting holds, the students training on Civic-specific stations this week are learning a skill set the plant may be phasing out in favor of CR-V hybrid and battery-integration work by the time they'd be hired.

For your morning huddle

Q

If Honda is quietly shifting Greensburg's future product mix toward CR-V hybrid, are our regional workforce partnerships training students for the skills that plant will need in 2028, or the ones it needs today?

Check your bid list against GE Appliances' $150 million in new U.S. supplier awards, and ask your regional workforce partnerships whether they're training students for Greensburg's current Civic line or the CR-V hybrid skill set the plant may need by 2028.

Briefing note

Impact
The timing creates a quiet credibility gap: just one day before this story ran, CarScoops reported that Honda has reportedly scrapped plans to build the next-generation Civic at Greensburg in 2028, shifting that capacity to CR-V production instead. That means the virtual welding stations and Civic-specific assembly simulations students worked with this week may train them for a nameplate Honda is preparing to phase out of the plant in favor of CR-V hybrid production, which demands a different powertrain and battery-integration skill set entirely.
Watch
Whether Honda issues any formal confirmation on next-gen CR-V production timing at Greensburg, after telling CarScoops it 'doesn't speculate on future production plans.'
