Trump Threatens Up to 300% Tariffs on Foreign Firms That Don't Build U.S. Factories, Names South Korea
Speaking at a campaign rally in Vandalia, Ohio on Saturday, Trump said foreign companies that fail to build U.S. factories within roughly 18 months could face tariffs of 150% to 300%, naming South Korea, China, Japan, and Canada. The threat comes amid separate pressure on Seoul over its $350 billion U.S. investment commitment, including a disputed Alaska LNG project that South Korea's Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan says must meet commercial viability standards before any money moves, with Glenfarne Group estimating the project at $44.5-$54.5 billion.
- Impact
- The under-reported wrinkle is that the companies most likely to be squeezed are already complying: SK Hynix is building a $3.87 billion AI memory packaging facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, and Samsung is committing $37 billion-plus in Taylor, Texas through 2030, meaning Trump's manufacturing-FDI threat is really aimed at redirecting Korean financial capital toward Alaska LNG, not new factories. Glenfarne's own financing math needs roughly 3 more mtpa in commercial commitments to reach the 16 mtpa threshold required for a final investment decision, so if Seoul holds its line, the project likely stalls, which would also strand a procurement opportunity for any Indiana suppliers of pipe, compressors, or industrial equipment tied to the project.
- Watch
- Whether Seoul commits to Alaska LNG before the roughly 18-month compliance clock Trump described, and any movement toward Glenfarne's final investment decision.
- For the huddle
Since SK Hynix's West Lafayette build already satisfies the 'build here or pay' mandate, are there other Korean or Japanese suppliers facing this same deadline that we should be courting for Indiana relocation now rather than waiting?
