Trump Rolls Back Biden-Era Fuel Economy Standards, Names Indiana Among States With New Auto Investment
President Trump announced via Truth Social that his administration approved new, looser fuel economy standards replacing Biden-era rules that had targeted roughly 50.4 mpg by 2031, touting more than $100 billion in automotive investment and naming Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and South Carolina as states set to see new or expanded plants. GM and Stellantis shares rose 3% and Ford gained about 1% on the news, while Tesla fell 2%; Trump credited Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
- Impact
- The real financial lever is the elimination of tradeable CAFE compliance credits starting model year 2028 (a revenue stream NHTSA itself called a 'windfall for EV-exclusive manufacturers' like Tesla) while GM alone is projected to save $20.4 billion in compliance tech costs through 2031. Stellantis's Kokomo, Indiana engine operations are slated to build the new GMET4 EVO four-cylinder ICE engine starting this year, which gets regulatory cover under the new rule but carries stranded-asset risk if global EV adoption outpaces the U.S. market; separately, PolitiFact found the $100 billion investment claim largely reflects reallocations at existing plants rather than new ones, and a Sierra Club legal challenge is already pending.
- Watch
- The outcome of the Sierra Club's legal challenge to the rollback and the formal NHTSA rule publication that locks in the new mpg targets.
- For the huddle
If we supply components into Kokomo's new ICE engine line, how exposed are we if EV adoption rebounds before this rule's 2031 horizon plays out?
