Indiana Manufacturing Jobs Automation Risk Ranks Third Nationally

CJS Automation, a UK-based industrial automation parts supplier, crosswalked May 2025 federal labor data against the 2013 Oxford automation framework and put 47.57% of Indiana jobs, about 1.4 million positions, in occupations it calls highly exposed to automation, third behind Nevada and South Dakota. The largest exposed category is laborers who move freight and stock by hand, at 103,200 jobs. Indianapolis runs lower than the state average, at 45.44%.

A separate, peer-reviewed OECD reanalysis using task-level data rather than occupation labels put true automation risk closer to 9%, and CJS Automation sells automation parts, a commercial interest in amplifying the urgency of its own ranking. The release lands days after Governor Mike Braun's announcement that Amazon will invest more than $100 million in a 585,000-square-foot robotics plant in Greenwood, creating 300 jobs by the end of 2028, Amazon's fourth robotics plant and part of a reported strategy shift toward selling robots to outside customers.

Impact
The under-reported wrinkle here is methodological: a peer-reviewed OECD reanalysis using task-level data, not occupation-level labels, put true automation risk at just 9%, versus Frey-Osborne's 47%, and CJS Automation is itself an industrial automation parts supplier with a commercial interest in amplifying automation urgency. Meanwhile Amazon's Greenwood plant is part of a bigger strategic shift, its fourth robotics plant, following an Austin, Texas facility, that CEO Andy Jassy has said could eventually sell robots to outside customers, repositioning Amazon from robotics buyer to competitor against Symbotic (which runs Walmart's automation network on a $22.5 billion backlog), FANUC, ABB and Yaskawa.
Watch
Whether Indiana workforce agencies cite the CJS ranking in NextLevel Jobs or WIOA funding decisions, and any update on Amazon's Greenwood hiring ramp toward its 2028 target.
For the huddle

If an independent task-level reanalysis puts real automation risk closer to 9% instead of the 47% headline number, are we making retraining or capex decisions off a methodology that overstates the threat, and have we actually mapped which of our roles resemble the 103,200 highest-risk freight/stock jobs?

Yes. Even with a disputed methodology, the specific occupation categories CJS flagged (freight handling, repetitive single-task roles) are worth identifying on your own floor regardless of which exposure number you trust, because that mapping is the first step toward a reskilling plan either way.
