Indiana's $10.79 Million ADAPT Grant Opens for Auto Suppliers, Behind Michigan's Head Start
Governor Mike Braun announced the Automotive Diversification and Production Transition program, a $10.79 million grant pool funded by a U.S. Department of Energy award, aimed at roughly 320 small and mid-sized Indiana auto suppliers still concentrated in internal combustion engine components. Grants run from $100,000 to $1 million and require a dollar-for-dollar match from the company, with reimbursement paid only after the supplier has already spent the money on equipment, software, or training. Applications close January 8, 2027, with awards finalized in spring 2027 and projects due by the end of 2028. Michigan already closed its own $22.6 million share of the same federal pool in September 2026 and named 11 suppliers a full application cycle ahead of Indiana's timeline. The reimbursement structure also caps effective project size near $2 million once the match is added in, well short of the $5 million to $10 million many suppliers say EV-grade retooling actually costs.
- Impact
- Michigan already finished its own $22.6 million share of the same federal pool in September 2026, awarding 11 named suppliers a full application cycle ahead of Indiana's spring 2027 timeline, meaning Michigan's SMMs are already deploying retooled capacity while Indiana applicants are still filling out paperwork. The reimbursement-only structure is the real design constraint: suppliers must pay upfront before getting reimbursed, which favors firms with existing credit lines and effectively caps project size at $2 million (grant plus match) against the $5-10 million many suppliers actually need for EV-grade retooling.
- Watch
- The Jan. 8, 2027 application deadline and whether IEDC/Conexus Indiana publish which suppliers are shortlisted before the spring 2027 award announcement.
- For the huddle
Do our Tier 2/Tier 3 suppliers have the cash reserves or credit lines to front equipment costs under a reimbursement-only grant, or are the suppliers most exposed to the ICE-to-EV transition exactly the ones ADAPT's structure will exclude?
ADAPT pays only after a supplier has already spent the money, which favors firms with existing credit lines and effectively caps project size near $2 million, well under what EV-grade retooling costs most suppliers.
