Northern Indiana Anodize Completes $4M Fort Wayne Expansion

Northern Indiana Anodize held a ribbon-cutting October 22 for a $4 million equipment and technology expansion at its Bluffton Road facility in Allen County, the fourth major investment in the seven-year-old company. The project is expected to add 30 to 35 jobs paying $20 to $35 an hour and lift production capacity 40% to 50% without expanding the building's footprint.

The expansion also reads as competitive pressure. Lorin Industries just launched a new batch anodizing line in Muskegon, Michigan aimed at automotive and military work, and Dutch consolidator Aalberts N.V. is rolling up thermal processing and finishing shops through its Paulo Products acquisition, both competing for the same architectural and solar accounts NIA cites as its growth driver. The capacity increase could also push NIA's daily aluminum throughput toward 140,000 to 150,000 pounds, worth watching against Allen County's wastewater pretreatment capacity given the plant already uses nearly 3 million gallons of water a month.

Impact
This investment looks defensive as much as offensive: Lorin Industries in Muskegon, Michigan just launched a new batch anodizing line targeting automotive and military work, and Dutch giant Aalberts N.V. is consolidating the thermal-processing and finishing space through its Paulo Products acquisition, both squeezing independent regional shops like NIA on the architectural and solar accounts it's citing as its growth driver. A 40-50% capacity jump also means NIA could push daily aluminum throughput toward 140,000-150,000 pounds, which will test Allen County's wastewater pretreatment capacity given the plant already uses nearly 3 million gallons of water a month.
Watch
Watch for how Allen County's industrial wastewater infrastructure absorbs NIA's scaled-up output, and whether the company's Patterson Riegel rebrand signals a push toward larger national architectural or OEM accounts requiring Tier-1 supplier audits.
For the huddle

As national consolidators like Aalberts and regional rivals like Lorin Industries chase the same solar and architectural anodizing demand, are we positioned to compete on lead time the way NIA is now betting its $4 million will let it?

If one or two accounts make up most of your order volume, you carry the same customer concentration these two companies just built new capacity around, and you should know today what happens to your plant if that account slows down.
