KTR Corporation Plans $15 Million Expansion in Michigan City
KTR Corporation, the U.S. arm of German coupling maker KTR Kupplungstechnik, is consolidating its North American headquarters and manufacturing into a new 78,000-square-foot facility on 22 acres along CR 400 North in Michigan City. The La Porte County Board of Zoning Appeals approved the special use variance this past Tuesday. The move adds 15 jobs to KTR's current workforce of 35 and replaces a landlocked 42,000-square-foot site on Anchor Road. KTR has historically claimed roughly 80 percent of the global wind turbine coupling market, a position now under pressure as permanent-magnet direct-drive turbines, which skip the gearbox and most of the coupling content entirely, grow at a 15.7 percent annual rate and already account for a quarter of new offshore wind capacity worldwide. Competitors including Regal Rexnord, Dodge Industrial and Siemens' Flender unit have all launched competing coupling lines in the past year. It's also possible the added floor space is going toward KTR's hydraulic component line, which carries none of the wind-coupling substitution risk, a detail worth asking about before assuming this is a straightforward capacity story.
- Impact
- KTR has historically claimed roughly 80% of the global wind turbine coupling market, a segment now facing real substitution risk as permanent-magnet direct-drive turbines, which eliminate gearboxes and most coupling content, grow at a 15.7% CAGR and already hold a quarter of global offshore nameplate additions. Rivals Regal Rexnord (which absorbed Altra Industrial Motion), Dodge Industrial (new StratoLink disc coupling line, October 2025) and Flender/Siemens (N-ZAPEX gear coupling, March 2026) are all pressuring KTR's distribution footprint, which is likely why KTR is doubling its floor space to compete on lead time rather than breadth. The more interesting possibility buried in the filing is that hydraulic components, not couplings, may be the real driver of the new square footage, since that product line isn't exposed to the direct-drive substitution threat.
- Watch
- Whether EDCMC, La Porte County Council, or IEDC announce an incentives package tied to the CR 400 North site, since none has surfaced yet despite KTR's history of receiving conditional tax credits in 2012 and 2014.
- For the huddle
Given KTR's wind-coupling exposure to the direct-drive shift, should we be asking Eric Stachowiak or EDCMC whether hydraulic components or couplings are driving the majority of the new 78,000-square-foot buildout before assuming this is a straightforward capacity story?
Start with KTR's hydraulic component line rather than its wind coupling business, since the coupling side carries real substitution risk from direct-drive turbines and the hydraulic side doesn't. The Crane reactor itself offers nothing locally, fueling and refueling both happen at Radiant's Oak Ridge, Tennessee factory, so don't plan around any local content there.
