Hyundai Translead Adds 1,250 Jobs While Wabash National's Goshen Plant Sits Idle
Hyundai Translead announced Thursday it is adding 1,250 jobs on top of the 2,500 it committed in March, bringing its total commitment in Will County, Illinois to 3,750 jobs and $600 million across two new semi-trailer factories near Joliet. Governor J.B. Pritzker's office called it the largest manufacturing job commitment in recent Illinois history, and the state is funding a new training academy at Joliet Junior College that will double the school's welding capacity. The timing is the story. Wabash National, the industry's largest dry van producer, idled its Goshen, Indiana and Little Falls, Minnesota plants in early 2026 and isn't expecting rehires or added shifts before the second half of 2027. Hyundai Translead is adding a third production shift before its Will County plant has finished a full production cycle, betting ahead of ACT Research's forecast that trailer production climbs to roughly 307,000 units by 2028. One company is confident enough to staff up now. The other is still waiting.
- Impact
- This expansion lands at the exact moment Hyundai Translead's two biggest U.S. rivals are pulling back: Wabash National, the industry's #1 dry van producer, idled plants in Goshen, Indiana and Little Falls, Minnesota in early 2026 and doesn't expect rehires or added shifts before the second half of 2027, while #2 player Great Dane's backlogs still trail the last upcycle. Hyundai Translead is effectively running a counter-cyclical land grab, adding a third production shift before its Will County plant has even completed a full production cycle, timed to front-run ACT Research's forecast of trailer production surging to roughly 307,000 units by 2028.
- Watch
- Wabash National's plant rehire and shift-restoration timeline at its idled Goshen, Indiana facility, expected no earlier than the second half of 2027.
- For the huddle
If Hyundai Translead is confident enough in trailer demand to add a third shift in Illinois right now, what does that tell us about the realistic timeline for Wabash's Goshen plant to restore jobs, and should we be planning around a 2027 recovery or a longer freight downturn?
Treat Hyundai Translead's decision to staff up now as the stronger indicator. A competitor committing to a full shift ahead of ACT Research's 2028 production forecast says more about where trailer demand is actually headed than an idled plant with no announced restart date.
