Sen. Banks' Fort Wayne Defense Summit Puts Contested Contracts on Stage
Sen. Jim Banks hosts his 5th annual Northeast Indiana Defense Summit Oct. 27 to 28 at the Pearl Event Center and Grand Wayne Center in Fort Wayne's Allen County, co-promoted with the Northeast Indiana Defense Industry Association. Confirmed speakers include Under Secretary of War Emil Michael, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao, Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle, Palantir's Mike Gallagher and Shyam Sankar, Saronic Technologies CEO Dino Mavrookas, Castelion CEO Bryon Hargis, and Hanwha Defense's Tom Anderson.
This is a live showcase for contested dollars, not a ceremony. Saronic, valued at $9.25 billion after a $1.75 billion raise, is challenging Huntington Ingalls and General Dynamics for Navy surface vessel work. Hanwha is bidding $1.05 to $1.2 billion for Austal USA at the same time. Castelion has displaced Raytheon and Lockheed in Navy hypersonics since the HALO program's 2024 cancellation. Prometheus Energetics, which Banks secured $150 million for at Crane, shares a Tuesday panel with the financier co-anchoring that same munitions hub, a pairing closer to a contract-ecosystem status briefing than a typical panel.
- Impact
- This isn't a ceremonial convening, it's a live competitive showcase for contested defense dollars: Saronic (now valued at $9.25B after a $1.75B raise) is challenging legacy shipbuilders Huntington Ingalls and General Dynamics for Navy surface vessel work, Hanwha is simultaneously bidding $1.05-1.2 billion for Austal USA, and Castelion has displaced Raytheon and Lockheed in Navy hypersonics after the HALO program's 2024 cancellation. The under-reported pairing is Prometheus Energetics and ACMI Group on the same Tuesday panel, Banks secured $150 million for the Prometheus project at Crane in the 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' and ACMI's CEO is the financier co-anchoring that same munitions hub, making this closer to a contract-ecosystem status briefing than a typical panel.
- Watch
- Whether Palantir's dual Gallagher/Sankar appearance signals a Maven Smart System pitch for NSWC Crane, and any update on Hanwha's Austal USA bid ahead of CFIUS review.
- For the huddle
Could our shop supply into the Castelion or Saronic contract ecosystems being discussed at this summit, and do we know who at NSWC Crane to approach before those performance requirements get locked in?
Rolls-Royce's West Lafayette test facility now certifies the AE 1107F engine for the Army's MV-75 Cheyenne, a program that could need 1,000 to 2,000-plus engines starting in 2028, so suppliers who want in should make contact well before that vendor base locks in.
