Purdue and Google AI Summit Registration Closes October 21
Purdue and Google Public Sector are holding the third annual Purdue + Google AI Summit October 29-30 in Indianapolis, themed "AI Impact: From Possible to Proven." Registration closes Wednesday, October 21 at 5 p.m. ET. The Materials & Manufacturing and Transportation tracks have drawn past industrial presenters from Caterpillar, Cummins, and Eli Lilly, with this year's speakers including INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist and Horizon3.ai CEO Snehal Antani.
What's less visible in the promotion: Mung Chiang, the former Purdue president who architected the January 2026 Google partnership and the university's new AI-competency graduation requirement, left for Northwestern University on July 1, mid-contract. Interim president Mitch Daniels is now carrying commitments he didn't originate during an active presidential search. Google also added Morgan State as a second university partner in September, ending any exclusivity with Purdue, and Carnegie Mellon countered with its own Fujitsu-backed Physical AI Research Center. Indiana manufacturers weighing deeper engagement with Purdue's Institute for Physical Artificial Intelligence are betting on a partnership whose institutional continuity isn't locked in.
- Impact
- The summit is being promoted as a stable multi-year platform, but the architect of the January 2026 Google partnership and Purdue's new AI-competency graduation requirement, former president Mung Chiang, left for Northwestern University on July 1, mid-contract, leaving interim president Mitch Daniels to carry commitments he didn't originate during an active presidential search. Google is also no longer treating Purdue as exclusive (it added Morgan State as a second university partner in September) while Carnegie Mellon countered with its own Fujitsu-backed Physical AI Research Center, meaning Indiana manufacturers weighing deeper IPAI engagement are betting on a partnership whose institutional continuity isn't guaranteed.
- Watch
- The October 21, 5 p.m. ET registration deadline, and any update on Purdue's permanent presidential search affecting the IPAI roadmap.
- For the huddle
Given the leadership turnover at Purdue, should we commit engineering staff to multi-year IPAI pilots now, or wait for clarity on who's actually steering the partnership?
Purdue's Google partnership lost its architect to Northwestern mid-contract, and the NWS Crane reactor still has to prove a commercial vendor can site and operate outside the NRC process. Treat both as developments worth watching, not commitments to build your own plans around yet.
