Governor Braun Stacks Defense Wins From Space Academy to NWS Crane
Governor Braun announced Indiana will bid, with Purdue, on the new U.S. Space Academy, and detailed a run of 2026 defense wins: a Department of War plan to install Indiana's first advanced nuclear Micro Modular Reactor at Naval Weapons Station Crane by no later than September 2028, Rolls-Royce's completed $1 billion decade-long investment in Indianapolis and West Lafayette test facilities, and Kratos Defense breaking ground on a second facility at its Odon campus following a completed $50 million hypersonics payload building. Indiana's defense sector has drawn $2.5 billion in committed capital since 2020, with a 24% rise in contracts.
The part worth watching is the Crane reactor structure: it will be privately owned and operated under Army regulatory authority, not the NRC, which makes it the first real test of whether a commercial nuclear vendor can site, permit, and operate a reactor outside the decade-long NRC process. Five Janus Program vendors, Antares, BWXT, General Atomics, Radiant, and Westinghouse, are competing for the assignment. The Space Academy bid has real competition too: Texas has pledged up to $100 million, and NASA's request for information is due October 26. And Kratos's Daviess County buildout, targeting 628 jobs by 2029, is landing in a county of roughly 33,000 people with a thin STEM pipeline.
- Impact
- The governor's framing skips the real precedent at NWS Crane: the reactor will be privately owned and operated under Army regulatory authority, not the NRC: the first live test of whether a commercial nuclear vendor can site, permit, and operate a reactor outside the decade-long NRC process, with five Janus Program vendors (Antares, BWXT, General Atomics, Radiant, Westinghouse) competing for the assignment. Meanwhile Indiana's Space Academy bid faces real money from rivals, Texas has pledged up to $100 million, and NASA's RFI is due October 26, and Kratos's Daviess County buildout, targeting 628 jobs by 2029, is landing in a county of roughly 33,000 people with a thin STEM pipeline.
- Watch
- NASA's October 26 RFI deadline for Space Academy bids, and the Army/Navy announcement of which Janus Program vendor is selected for NWS Crane.
- For the huddle
If a privately-run, Army-regulated reactor at NWS Crane proves out faster than NRC-licensed projects, would that change how we think about on-site power options for our own facilities?
Purdue's Google partnership lost its architect to Northwestern mid-contract, and the NWS Crane reactor still has to prove a commercial vendor can site and operate outside the NRC process. Treat both as developments worth watching, not commitments to build your own plans around yet.
