NIPSCO Northwest Indiana Outage: Ten Days In, 300 Poles Destroyed, No Reliable ETR

Ninety-nine-mph winds on August 11 destroyed 300 distribution poles and 44 transmission poles in Gary alone. As of Wednesday, more than 20,000 customers in Gary remain without power, with full restoration targeted for August 25. NIPSCO executive Melody Birmingham stated at a press conference: "These aren't simple repairs. These are systems that are being rebuilt."

The credibility problem is hard to ignore. NiSource just secured an IURC-approved rate increase with $769.5 million earmarked specifically for replacing aging poles and lines, and a single storm destroyed 300 distribution poles in one city. That rate-case narrative is taking its first real hit.

The more acute issue for plant leaders is this: NIPSCO's estimated restoration times were unreliable or unavailable for an extended period after the storm, which left Lake County industrial facilities without a planning anchor for production scheduling or delivery commitments. A 10-day regional outage depletes Northwest Indiana fuel logistics in ways a 4-hour event never would. Most generator continuity plans assume a short outage with a functioning resupply chain. This event is testing whether that assumption holds.

Q

What does the NIPSCO Lake County outage mean for manufacturers with plants in Northwest Indiana?

If you operate in Lake County or rely on suppliers there, the immediate risk is that NIPSCO's estimated restoration times were unreliable for an extended period, leaving facilities without a planning anchor for production scheduling or delivery commitments. Beyond the current outage, a 10-day regional event depletes local fuel logistics in ways a short outage never does, call your diesel supplier this week and confirm where you sit on their priority list during a regional emergency, because your generator runtime is only as long as your resupply contract is enforceable.
