ADAPT Grant Program Opens With Michigan Two Rounds Ahead
Gov. Mike Braun opened applications Oct. 26 for ADAPT, administered by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and Conexus Indiana, offering $100,000 to $1 million grants to roughly 320 small and mid-size Indiana auto suppliers with fewer than 1,500 employees. Applications close Jan. 8, 2027, with awards finalized next spring and projects due by the end of 2028. Michigan's equivalent program already finished its first round in September, splitting $21 million of its $22.6 million pool among 11 suppliers, and separately committed $5 million to lock EV startup Slate into its own supplier network. The grants are reimbursement based, meaning a supplier fronts the capital for new equipment or training and collects payment later, a structure that works against the thinnest-balance-sheet suppliers the program says it wants to help most. Grant-funded equipment must also stay in the county where it's installed, a condition that could strand assets if an OEM customer, including Stellantis as it continues rationalizing plants, relocates production to another facility.
- Impact
- Michigan is already two steps ahead: its $22.6 million Supplier Conversion Grant Program finished Round 1 in September with 11 suppliers splitting $21 million, and Michigan separately put $5 million behind EV startup Slate's supplier network to lock sourcing relationships before Indiana suppliers could compete. The reimbursement-first design is the under-discussed catch: suppliers must front capital before getting a dollar back, structurally disadvantaging the thinnest-balance-sheet firms the program says it prefers, and the rule that grant-funded equipment must stay in the county it's installed in could strand assets if a supplier's OEM customer shifts production, a live risk given Stellantis's ongoing plant rationalization.

- For the huddle
If we'd need to front our own capital before ADAPT reimburses us, do we have the cash position to apply at all, and are we already behind Michigan's suppliers in qualifying for the next 5-7 year OEM EV sourcing cycle?
Michigan finished its first grant round in September with 11 suppliers splitting $21 million and locked EV startup Slate into its supplier network separately, so Indiana suppliers applying through Jan. 8 are chasing the same OEM sourcing cycle from behind, and the reimbursement structure means you need the cash on hand before any of it comes back.
