October's 6,000-Job Manufacturing Layoff Wave Reaches Gas City, Indiana
U.S. manufacturers filed WARN notices covering more than 6,000 jobs in October. Dakkota Integrated Systems is closing its Detroit plant and cutting nearly 400 jobs after CPK Interior Products won the Stellantis Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango instrument panel contract, the same company that previously took business from Dakkota's Windsor, Ontario plant. Lear will close its Sterling Heights, Michigan facility in July 2027, cutting 67 jobs while automating seating production elsewhere; CEO Raymond Scott told investors the automation is expected to cut conversion costs 10% to 15%. 3M is closing its 80-year-old Fairmont, Minnesota plant as part of 16 facility closures with 10 more planned. None of the national coverage of this wave mentions American Woodmark's WARN filing covering 207 workers in Gas City, Grant County, Indiana, filed the same month.
- Impact
- The Dakkota closure is a confirmed competitive displacement, not generic 'market conditions': CEO Aaron Rivers said Dakkota: a Rush Group-Magna joint venture, was outbid by CPK Interior Products for the Stellantis Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango instrument panel work, the same company that previously took business from Dakkota's Windsor, Ontario plant. For Indiana specifically, this national tally undercounts local impact entirely: American Woodmark filed its own WARN notice covering 207 workers in Gas City, Grant County, Indiana in October, a cut that never appears in national coverage of the 6,000-job wave.
- Watch
- Watch for any additional Indiana WARN filings beyond American Woodmark's Gas City notice, and track Lear's Sterling Heights shutdown through its July 2027 closure as the template for a 10-15% automation-driven conversion-cost cut.
- For the huddle
If a Tier 1 supplier like Dakkota can lose an entire Stellantis program to a competitor like CPK Interior Products with little warning, how exposed are our own single-customer contracts to the same kind of overnight re-sourcing?
Run the math on your top customer's share of total revenue this week. If one account can be re-sourced on short notice the way CPK Interior Products displaced Dakkota, that concentration is the thing to address before a contract renewal, not after a layoff notice.
