Astemo's $11 Million Muncie Expansion Ties the Plant to Honda's Hybrid Volume

Astemo Ltd. announced on November 4 that it will invest more than $11 million in its Muncie plant at 4400 N. Superior Drive, adding injection molding capacity and a new assembly line for the AP3 HEV intake manifold. Production starts March 2027 and the project adds up to nine jobs over three years. The Muncie City Council approved a five-year phased tax abatement in July on the underlying $9.4 million equipment investment, and the project also transfers a V6 intake manifold line from Astemo's Greenfield, Indiana plant into Muncie. Honda completed a majority buyout of Astemo from Hitachi in December 2025, raising its stake to 61 percent, so the new AP3 HEV line almost certainly runs Honda's e:HEV platforms. That makes Muncie a captive Honda supply site rather than an open-market competitor, and pulling the V6 line out of Greenfield concentrates Indiana's Astemo output on one 100,000-square-foot building just as Mann+Hummel, Mahle and Denso push to launch competing HEV manifold capacity in the same window.

Impact
Honda completed a majority buyout of Astemo from Hitachi in December 2025, raising its stake to 61%, so the AP3 HEV line at Muncie almost certainly serves Honda's e:HEV platforms, making this plant a captive Honda supply site rather than an open-market Tier 1 competitor whose survival now tracks Honda's hybrid program volume, not competitive re-sourcing. The quietly-approved transfer of the V6 line from Greenfield to Muncie also concentrates Indiana's Astemo intake manifold production on a single 100,000-square-foot site, trading logistics simplicity for single-site supply risk just as rivals Mann+Hummel, Mahle and Denso are racing to launch competing HEV manifold capacity in the same window.
Watch
Watch for the new AP3 HEV assembly line to enter production in March 2027 and for confirmation of how much Greenfield volume shifts to Muncie.
For the huddle

If Astemo's Muncie site is now functionally a captive Honda e:HEV supply point, how exposed are our own single-OEM-dependent lines if that customer's program volume shifts?

Map every line in your plant against the customer that drives its volume, and flag any line where one OEM or customer accounts for more than half of output; that's the line most at risk if that customer's program gets rebid or restructured.
