AkzoNobel Completes $60M Powder Coatings Expansion, Warsaw Output Up 30%

AkzoNobel announced Oct. 29 the completion of a $60 million investment across three Powder Coatings sites in North America: Warsaw, Indiana; Reading, Pennsylvania; and Monterrey, Mexico. At the Warsaw plant in Kosciusko County, production capacity rose 30% and the workforce grew 10% to roughly 90 employees, through conversion of an existing building into an automated manufacturing space. Spokesperson Abbey Reding told Inside INdiana Business more hiring is expected, and Managing Director Jeff Jirak framed the program as support for automotive, battery, and energy-storage customers.

This is the second phase of a capex ramp that doubled from roughly $30 million in 2024 to $60 million now, and the current site list no longer includes Nashville, AkzoNobel's own North American headquarters site, without explanation. The expansion also lands while AkzoNobel pursues a pending merger with Axalta targeted to close in late 2026 or early 2027, creating a combined company worth roughly $17 billion. If antitrust regulators demand divestitures in overlapping powder-coatings markets, a newly modernized Warsaw plant becomes a logical candidate to sell off. And the fact that capacity rose 30% against only 10% more headcount points to an automation-heavy expansion that may not scale jobs proportionally the next time around.

Impact
This is the second phase of a capex ramp that doubled from roughly $30 million in 2024 to $60 million now, and quietly dropped Nashville, AkzoNobel's own North American headquarters site, from the current site list without explanation. It also lands while AkzoNobel pursues a pending merger with Axalta targeted to close in late 2026 or early 2027, creating a combined ~$17 billion coatings company; if antitrust regulators demand divestitures in overlapping powder-coatings markets, a newly modernized Warsaw plant becomes a logical carve-out candidate, and the fact that capacity jumped 30% against only 10% headcount growth signals an automation-heavy expansion that may not scale jobs proportionally going forward.

For the huddle

With Warsaw's output up 30% on only 10% more headcount, what does that automation ratio tell us about our own hiring assumptions the next time we plan a comparable capacity expansion?

Both companies grew output faster than headcount, Warsaw added 30% capacity on 10% more staff, so plan your next capacity expansion around automated equipment rather than assuming proportional hiring.
