SELF DRIVE Act and Mature-Node Chips: Two More Clocks Running

H.R. 7390's September 2027 NHTSA deadline creates a hard design-cycle clock for Indiana component suppliers, whether or not the bill passes standalone before December 2026. If your facility supplies components that intersect with AV architecture, the design-cycle calendar has already started. Do not wait for a final vote to model your exposure.

On chips: 8-inch foundry prices are up 5 to 15 percent in Q2 2026. TrendForce projects the pressure continues into 2027. The industrial microcontrollers and power-management ICs inside your variable frequency drives and control panels will work through to your quotes over the next two to four quarters. Pull your capital project budgets from 12 to 18 months ago and run them against current VFD and control panel quotes, because those numbers have increased and the foundry utilization driving that increase has not yet peaked.
