Stellantis Belvidere Pushed to 2028: What Indiana Auto Suppliers Need to Reassess Now
Stellantis confirmed on August 14 that the next-generation Jeep Cherokee will be built at its Belvidere, Illinois plant (idle since February 2023) on the new STLA One global vehicle platform. Pilot production is now targeted for the first half of 2028. Series production is targeted for the second half of 2029. The investment has been increased to more than $800 million, up from the $600 million announced in October 2025.
That headline number carries a financial exposure the announcement does not address. Stellantis was awarded a $335 million DOE grant to electrify Belvidere, and that grant now carries "terminate" status under the Trump administration's cancellation of clean energy awards. Terminate status is not the same as formal revocation (grant terms typically govern reimbursement of qualifying costs already incurred) but if the grant is fully revoked and no qualifying costs are reimbursed, Stellantis' effective exposure could approach $1.1 billion. That is a material increase to the project's all-in cost that could pressure the timeline further.
There is a second risk variable Indiana auto suppliers need to model. The UAW national contract expires April 30, 2028, potentially just weeks before pilot production is confirmed to begin. That timing creates optionality for both sides at the bargaining table. Model both a clean launch scenario and a work-action scenario. The published timeline is not the only planning case.
If any of your tooling investments or production contracts were timed to the original 2027 restart, reassess those commitments against the new 2028 timeline now, not when the third schedule slip becomes the fourth.

- Q
What is the most important thing Indiana auto suppliers should do right now given the Stellantis Belvidere timeline slip?
Any tooling investment or production contract timed to the original 2027 Belvidere restart needs a formal reassessment now. Model both a clean 2028 launch and a work-action scenario: the UAW contract expiration on April 30, 2028 lands just weeks before pilot production is scheduled to begin, and that overlap is a material planning risk.
