SK hynix West Lafayette: Groundbreaking August 27, But the Supplier Window Is Open Now, Not Then

The ceremony is August 27. SK hynix is putting $3.87 billion into a 133.5-acre advanced semiconductor packaging and R&D facility in West Lafayette (its first U.S. facility) targeting mass production of high bandwidth memory chips for AI in the second half of 2028. SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung is expected alongside SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, and there is speculation Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang joins them.

What the guest list obscures: the groundbreaking is 17 months late. The original target was March 2025. A West Lafayette City Council land-use dispute held things up until May of last year, and SK hynix flagged in late 2025 that 2.5D packaging for AI accelerators remains difficult at scale. Combine those two factors and a Nvidia-qualified production ramp extending beyond the stated H2 2028 target is the planning assumption suppliers should use, not a fixed date.

For Indiana suppliers, that schedule reality is actually useful. The campus will need specialty chemical, ultra-pure water, and advanced materials vendors established regionally well before a 2028 startup. That qualification window is open now, and it overlaps directly with Eli Lilly's $9 billion Lebanon buildout competing for the same skilled-trades labor in the Lafayette-Indianapolis corridor. If you have relevant capabilities, the time to pursue qualification is before preferred-supplier agreements get locked in, not after groundbreaking photographs stop circulating.

Q

What does the SK hynix West Lafayette groundbreaking mean for Indiana suppliers right now?

The groundbreaking ceremony on August 27 is 17 months behind its original schedule, and SK hynix has flagged technical difficulty scaling 2.5D packaging for AI accelerators. Suppliers in specialty chemicals, ultra-pure water, and advanced materials should treat the preferred-vendor qualification window as open now, preferred-supplier agreements will be locked in before production ramps, not after.
