SEL's $25M West Lafayette Expansion

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), headquartered in Pullman, Washington, is investing $25 million to expand its only Indiana plant at 1838 State Road 26 in the Purdue Discovery Park District, adding PCB assembly, SMT, electronic assembly, and conformal coat lines. The project boosts recloser-control production capacity by more than 35%, adds roughly 130 jobs on top of the facility's current 211 employees, and targets completion in March 2027.

Impact
This isn't just a capacity story: SEL is vertically integrating PCB fabrication to close a cost and lead-time vulnerability that rivals like Eaton's Cooper Power Form 7 platform and Schneider Electric could otherwise exploit, while a February 2026 tie-up with S&C Electric on the SEL-651RD control for IntelliRupter installations signals SEL is building West Lafayette capacity partly for a partner-channel volume commitment, not just organic demand. SEL's 100%-ESOP structure means it can run this $115M multi-state capital program (Idaho, Indiana, North Carolina) without the quarterly earnings pressure a public competitor would face.
Watch
Track whether SEL's SEL-651RD/S&C Electric IntelliRupter collaboration expands further in 2027, and whether the March 2027 completion date holds as Indiana's largest data-center projects ramp up distribution infrastructure demand.
For the huddle

If recloser-control lead times tighten as utilities race to interconnect Indiana's data center buildout, are we positioned to benefit from faster grid upgrades near our facilities, or exposed to delays if our utility's feeder work gets queued behind hyperscaler projects?
