Rolls-Royce's $1B Indianapolis Build, and the West Lafayette Test Cell That Gates the Next Contract

Rolls-Royce has completed a $1 billion, decade-long investment in its Indianapolis manufacturing, assembly, and test facilities, the largest single U.S. investment the company has made. The headline number is real. The altitude test facility in West Lafayette is the actual story.

That test cell, built in partnership with Purdue University, can simulate high-altitude conditions on the ground. It appears to be a critical certification asset for the AE 1107F engine that will power the Army's MV-75 Cheyenne. If altitude and endurance trials later in 2026 go well there, Indiana's position for the follow-on production contract strengthens. That is the sequence worth watching, not the announcement.

Separately, the $2.6 billion Air Force B-52 Commercial Engine Replacement Program (past critical design review, targeting May 2033 completion) sustains seven more years of F130 engine production in Indianapolis and 3,500 UAW workers. The AE engine family's 80 percent component commonality across variants means aftermarket and MRO revenue from Indianapolis-built engines is structurally durable, not a one-cycle story.

If you run a precision machining or materials operation in Indiana, the window to get into this supply chain is before the Cheyenne production contract is awarded, not after it is announced.

What is the Rolls-Royce altitude test cell in West Lafayette and why does it matter for Indiana suppliers?
