SK Hynix Breaks Ground in West Lafayette, and the Detail the Ceremony Buried
SK Hynix held its ceremonial groundbreaking at Purdue University's Holloway Gymnasium for its HBM packaging and R&D facility in Purdue Research Park. The confirmed investment is more than four billion dollars, up from the $3.87 billion figure in the original Commerce Department documentation. Up to $458 million in CHIPS Act direct funding backs the project. The cleanroom targets October 2028, with mass production of HBM4E and HBM5-class products beginning in the second half of 2029. Roughly 1,000 direct jobs at full operation, with approximately 7,000 total direct and indirect jobs projected across more than 100 planned ecosystem partners.
Here is the detail the ceremony coverage didn't name: SK Hynix confirmed at the Hot Chips conference four days before breaking ground that hybrid bonding will not be ready for HBM4E, it's pushed to HBM5, around 2029 to 2030. That means the Indiana cleanroom opens on MR-MUF bonding equipment. Whether that changes depends on where SK Hynix routes its next-generation hybrid bonding lines. They already have a 19 trillion won advanced packaging plant going up in Cheongju for 2027. If SK Hynix routes HBM5 hybrid bonding capacity to Indiana rather than Cheongju, a second capital event becomes plausible in the early 2030s. That is not a certainty, but it is a scenario Indiana suppliers should be positioned for.
More immediately relevant: the procurement wave concentrated in the 2027-to-2030 window is the opportunity in front of you now. If your operation produces ultra-pure chemicals, specialty gases, precision metrology equipment, or substrate materials, vendor qualification for a cleanroom of this scale typically opens 18 to 24 months ahead of commissioning, which puts the qualification window opening in 2026 and closing fast. Purdue Research Foundation is the site-development entry point. SK Hynix's U.S. procurement organization runs the actual vendor qualification process. Those are two separate conversations, and both need to start soon.
For your morning huddle
- Q
What should Indiana suppliers do right now to get into the SK Hynix vendor ecosystem?
Start two separate conversations immediately: Purdue Research Foundation handles site-development entry, while SK Hynix's U.S. procurement organization runs the actual vendor qualification process. Vendor qualification for a cleanroom of this scale typically opens 18 to 24 months ahead of commissioning, which means the window for the October 2028 cleanroom is open now and narrowing fast.
- Q
Is the SK Hynix bonding technology change a risk to the Indiana facility?
Not to the initial build, the Indiana cleanroom opens on MR-MUF bonding equipment, which is the current production technology. The open question is whether SK Hynix routes its next-generation hybrid bonding lines to Indiana or to its Cheongju facility for 2027. If Indiana gets HBM5 hybrid bonding capacity, a second capital event in the early 2030s becomes plausible. That is a scenario to position for, not a certainty to count on.
