Terre Haute's Drone Test Site and Purdue's AI Workforce Deal: What Indiana Manufacturers Need to Know

Terre Haute's drone test site is live, and Indiana manufacturers now face new workforce and supply chain access questions tied to Purdue's AI deal with Accenture.

Indiana activated one of only nine FAA-designated drone test sites in the country at Terre Haute Regional Airport on October 29, and the Army handed the state a second federal designation one day earlier that cuts vendor range-booking time from 18 months to about 30 days. The same week, Purdue's Mitch Daniels School of Business detailed a multiyear AI workforce partnership with Accenture that trains machine operators and plant managers on Purdue's West Lafayette campus, but the access runs through Accenture's named partnership, not through every Indiana manufacturer.

Purdue and Accenture's AI Workforce Deal Raises an Access Question

Purdue's Mitch Daniels School of Business and Accenture detailed a multiyear partnership built around two programs: the Smart Manufacturing Academy, a self-paced digital-transformation curriculum for machine operators, technicians, and plant managers, and the Smart Learning Factory, a production demonstration hub on the West Lafayette campus. Jessica Franta, Purdue's senior director of business partnerships, described Accenture's involvement as extending into advisory boards and student projects, not just recruiting.

Are we positioned as an Accenture- or Purdue-affiliated employer with early access to Smart Manufacturing Academy-trained graduates, or are we competing blind against companies that already have first-look recruiting rights?
