Steel Dynamics $534M Quarter, Indiana Grid High-Risk Warning, Crane Nuclear Reactor, and AES Rate Rehearing: TEG Daily September 10, 2026

MISO has reclassified Indiana's grid zone as high-risk for resource adequacy — and it is happening simultaneously with a $534 million Steel Dynamics quarter, a Pentagon nuclear reactor announcement at NWS Crane, and an unsettled utility regulatory structure that will set energy cost floors for every investor-owned utility in the state. Four stories. One pressure point on your cost structure, your energy bill, and your contractor availability heading into 2027.

Steel Dynamics Posts $534M Quarter — Indiana Steel Buyers Face Q1 2027 Backlog Risk

Fort Wayne-based Steel Dynamics reported Q2 2026 results on July 21: record quarterly shipments of 3.7 million tons, net sales up 33% to $6.1 billion, and net income nearly doubling to $534 million. The mechanism behind those numbers is precise and worth understanding.

Over the first half of 2026, average steel selling prices reached $1,247 per ton — up $183 from the prior-year period. Ferrous scrap input costs rose only $7 per ton over the same stretch. That spread is not temporary arbitrage. Charlotte-based Nucor posted a 92% year-over-year earnings increase in the same period, confirming that the EAF duopoly is structurally capturing tariff-era margins. Steel Dynamics' backlogs now extend 45% above year-ago levels into Q1 2027.

If you are buying domestic flat-rolled or structural steel, the planning variable is supply security, not just price. The question for your team: are your current supply agreements — terms, volumes, and pricing mechanisms — structured to protect you through at least mid-2027, or are you exposed to spot pricing at cyclical highs?

AES Indiana Rate Rehearing: The ROE Fight That Sets the Floor for Every Indiana Utility

Indiana Utility Consumer Counselor Abby Gray filed a petition for rehearing challenging the IURC's June approval of a $71 million AES Indiana base rate increase. The OUCC is contesting a 9.5% approved return on equity — they want 9.1% — along with a $3 million rate case expense pass-through and a payroll adjustment tied to over 100 vacant positions that the OUCC says produced a compensation windfall of more than $15 million.

There is a structural problem behind this proceeding worth naming directly. IURC Chair Anthony Swinger — elevated by Governor Braun from a 25-year career at the OUCC — is recused from voting on both the AES rehearing and Duke Energy Indiana's pending rate case due to his prior involvement with those proceedings. That removes the commissioner with the deepest consumer-advocacy background from the two most consequential proceedings before the commission right now.

The ROE floor this commission sets will inform rate cases across all five Indiana investor-owned utilities. If you are in AES's Central Indiana service territory, confirm now whether your industrial rate schedule is protected by the rate freeze through 2030 or whether tracker mechanisms for fuel and infrastructure costs can increase your rates before this case resolves.

Pentagon Announces Indiana's First Nuclear Reactor at NWS Crane — Supply Chain Window Opens Now

The Department of Defense announced September 10 that it will install an advanced Micro Modular Reactor at Naval Weapons Station Crane in Martin County by September 2028 — the first power-producing nuclear reactor in Indiana's history. The project runs through the Army's Janus Program. The specific vendor has not yet been named.

Janus is one of a small handful of near-term military microreactor awards — alongside Project Pele, where BWXT was already selected, and the Eielson Air Force Base deployment — that will determine which vendors reach commercial licensing first. Under the NRC's proposed Part 57 microreactor licensing rule, published April 2026 with finalization expected no earlier than mid-2027, operational data from a military deployment can accelerate commercial licensing for the same design. The regulatory clock is the risk: Part 57 finalization may not land until mid-2027, leaving as little as twelve to fifteen months between rule finalization and the September 2028 installation deadline.

Whoever wins Crane gains a reference deployment that materially de-risks commercial licensing and improves competitive positioning for follow-on utility contracts. Crane already anchors over $3 billion in annual economic impact for southern Indiana. If your company has any existing supplier relationships or certifications touching the defense tech or nuclear ecosystem at Crane or WestGate, the time to assess whether you can enter Janus Program procurement is now — before the vendor is named and the supply chain closes.

MISO High-Risk Status and the Data Center Cost-Shift: Indiana Grid High-Risk Warning Is Getting Worse

MISO's resource adequacy assessment for the Indiana grid high-risk zone reflects a deteriorating picture driven by coal retirements, slower-than-planned generation interconnection, and rising large-load requests — including hyperscaler data centers. Representative Spartz's letter to DOE and Interior on September 9 names the jurisdictional gap directly: FERC told state commissions that protecting ratepayers from transmission cost shifts is their job, not FERC's — and Indiana's IURC is simultaneously the same body being reconstituted under political pressure.

FERC Section 206 proceedings and MISO's corrective transmission projects across multiple Indiana utility systems create a live collision with the AES and Duke rate cases. If those transmission upgrade costs get allocated to existing ratepayers rather than to the hyperscalers driving the load growth, model what a 10 to 15 percent increase in your transmission and distribution charges does to your per-unit cost structure.

For the full background on how utility cost allocation for data centers works and what Indiana manufacturers can do about it, see Utility Cost Allocation for Data Centers: How Indiana Manufacturers Avoid Paying for Grid Buildout They Didn't Cause.

Questions for Your Morning Huddle

Q: What does MISO high-risk status mean for Indiana manufacturers' electricity costs?

A: MISO's high-risk classification for Indiana's grid zone signals that the region may not have adequate generation capacity to meet peak demand as coal plants retire and large new loads — including data centers — come online faster than replacement generation. For manufacturers, the near-term consequence is upward pressure on capacity charges and transmission costs, with potential reliability exposure during peak periods. Model a 10 to 15 percent increase in your transmission and distribution line items as a planning scenario.

Q: How does the AES Indiana rate rehearing affect other Indiana utilities?

A: The ROE the IURC ultimately approves or denies in the AES rehearing establishes the reference point that Duke Energy Indiana and the other three investor-owned utilities in the state will use in their own pending and upcoming rate cases. A higher approved ROE means a higher cost floor for every rate case that follows. The outcome of this proceeding will influence what every Indiana manufacturer pays for electricity for the next several years.

Q: Should Indiana steel buyers lock in supply agreements now?

A: Steel Dynamics' backlogs extending 45% above year-ago levels into Q1 2027, combined with Nucor's 92% earnings increase in the same period, confirms that EAF producers are structurally capturing tariff-era margins — not experiencing a temporary spike. Indiana steel buyers exposed to spot pricing at current levels should review supply agreement terms, volumes, and pricing mechanisms against mid-2027 exposure before backlog windows close further.

Q: How can Indiana manufacturers enter the Crane nuclear supply chain?

A: The Janus Program vendor has not yet been named, which means the supply chain has not closed. Companies with existing supplier relationships, quality certifications, or operational footprint touching the defense tech or nuclear ecosystem at NWS Crane or WestGate @Crane should assess their procurement eligibility now. Once the vendor is announced, the tier-one supply chain will fill quickly. The 24-month window before the September 2028 deadline is the entry point.
